Let the daughter's age be x 
mother's age will be 2y

then. x=2y
x-2y=0.................eq. 1

20 years ago 
daughter's age x-20
Mother's age 12(y-20) 
x-20 =12(y-20) 
x-20=12y-240 
x-12y=-20+240
x-12y=-220...........eq. 2


solving eqn 1 and 2 by substitution method.

from eqn. 1
x=2y

putting value of x in eqn..2
we get

x-12y=-220
x-12/2x=-220
x-6x=-220
-5x=-220
5x=220
x=44

hence age is 44.
