Let mother's age be x years & son's age be y years.

Therefore, x = 3y

 x - 3y = 0 ----------(1)

After 12 years

Mother's age = x+12

Son's age = y+12

Therefore, x+12 = 2(y+12)

 x+12 = 2y + 24

 x - 2y = 12 ----------(2)

(2) - (1)

⇒ x-2y -(x-3y) = 12-0

=> x-2y-x+3y = 12

=> y = 12

Substitute in (i), we get

x - 2*12 = 12

x - 24 = 12

x = 36.

Mother's age = 36 years

Son's age = 12 years

Hope this helps!
