Let the mother’s age be M and that of her daughter, D, now.

M = 3D …(1)

(M-6) = 5(D-6), or

M = 6+5D-30, or

M = 5D-24 …(2)

Equate (1) and (2)

3D = 5D-24, or

2D = 24, or

D = 12.
