Let the son’s age be n and the Mum’s age be 4n.

In 16 years the son will be n + 16 and the mother will be 4n + 16. Under which circumstances will she be twice her son’s age?

So when will 4n + 16 (mother’s new age) be equal to 2(n + 16) (twice the son’s new age)?

Compare:

4n + 16 = 2n + 32

2n = 16

∴ n = 8

So initially, the son is 8 and the mother is 32, four times the son’s age.

In 16 years’ time the son will be 24 and the mother will be 48, double his age.

Let  \: the  \: age  \: of  \: the  \: son \:  be \:  'x'

Then \:  the  \: age \: of \: the \: mother \: will \: \\  be \: 2 \:  +  \: 4x.

∴ \: 4x + 2 = 30

 =  > 4x = 30 - 2

 =  - 28

 =  > x =  \frac{28}{4}

 = 7 \: years
