a motor boat covers a certain distance downstream in a river in 9 hours it covers the same distance upstream in 10 hours the speed of the stream is one kilometre per hour find the speed of boat in still water

speed of stream=1 km/hr

speed in downstream=x+1

distance covered in 9 hrs

=(x+1)*9

speed in upstream=x-1

distance in 10 hrs

=10*(x-1)

Both these distances are same

So 10*(x-1)=9(x+1)

10x-10=9x+9

10x-9x=9+10

x=19 km/hr

hence speed of boat in still water=19 km/hr
