A motor boat takes 2 hours to travel a distance 9 km.

down the current and it takes 6 hours to travel the

same distance against the current. The speed of the

boat in still water and that of the current (in km/

hour) respectively are

LET THE SPEED OF STILL WATER BE X AND CURRENT BE Y.

SPEED OF BOAT IN DOWNSTREAM= X+Y

SPEED OF BOAT IN

UPSTREAM X- Y

SPEED =DISTANCE / TIME

X+Y= 9/2...... ( 1 )

X- Y = 3/2.... ( 2)

( 1 ) + ( 2 ) , we get

x= 3 km/ hour

y= 1.5 km/hour.
