let the speed of the still water be x km/he
Now speed upstream (18-x)km/hr
Now speed downstream (18+x)km/he
Now according to question
24 \div 18 - x - 24 \div 18 + x = 1

Now 24
 24(18 + x) - 24(18 - x) \div {18 }^{2}  -  {x }^{2}  = 1
24×18+24x-24×18+24x/324-x^2=1
48x=324-x^2
x^2+48x-324=0
 {x}^{2}   +  (54 - 6)x  - 324 = 0
 {x}^{2}   + 54x  - 6x - 324 = 0
x(x + 54) - 6(x + 54) = 0

(x + 54)(x - 6) = 0
x =  - 54 \: and \: x = 6
As the speed of the stream cannot be negative therefore
x=6km/hr
