there fore the speed upstream will be 5-x

and the speed downstream will be 5+x

we know time = distance/speed

the difference between the up and down times is 1 hour

therefore

1 = 12/5-x - 12/5+x

1 = 12(5 + x - 5 + x)/5^2 - x^2

25 - x^2 = 12(2x)

x^2 + 24x - 25 = 0

x^2 + 25x - x - 25 = 0

x(x + 25) -1(x + 25) = 0

x = 1 and x = -25

but speed cannot be negative

therefore the speed of the stream is 1 kmph
