A motor boat whose speed is 24 km/h in still water takes 1 hour more to 32 k upstream than to return downstream . find speed of stream

Let the speed in stream be x km/hr.

Then,

Upstream = 32/24-x

Downstream = 32/24+x
________________________________________________________

According to question,

(32/24-x) - (32/24+x) = 1

32(24+x) - 32(24-x)   = (24-x)(24+x)

768+32x-768+32x     = 576-x²

⇒ x²+64x-576

⇒ x²+72x-8x-576

⇒ x(x+72)-8(x+72)

⇒ (x-8)(x+72)

Then, x = 8, -72

Speed cannot be in negative.
