A motorboat goes downstream in a river and covers the distance between two ports in 5 hours and returns back in 7 hours. If the water is flowing at 2 km/hour,find the speed of the boat in still water.

Let the speed of boat in still water be x

Speed of current = 2 km/h

Speed in down stream = x+2km/h

Time=5hrs

Speed in upstream =x-2km/h

Time =7hrs

Here ,the between two portsmis equal

So, d =s/t

Atq,

5(x+2)=7(x-2)

= 5x+10=7x-14

=10+14 = 7x-5x

=24=2x

=x=24/2

=x=12

Therefore,speed of boat in still water = 12km/h
