A motorboat goes downstream in river and covers a distance between two coastal towns in 5 hrs. It covers this distance upstream in 6 hrs. If the speed of the stream is 3km/hr , find the speed of motorboat in still water

Distance = 5(x + 2) km

Solve x:

Since both the distance are the same:

6(x- 2) = 5( x + 2)

6x - 12 = 5x + 10

x = 22 km/h

hence , 22 is the speed of motorboat in still water
