A motorboat is observed to travel 10 km h- relative to the earth in the direction 37° north of east. If the
velocity of the boat due to the wind only is 2 km h-westward and that due to the current only is 4 km h-1
southward, what is the magnitude and direction of the velocity of the boat due to its own power ?

Answer:

East - i vector North - j vector.

Boat velocity = Own velocity + Wind velocity + Current velocity.

Written as:

Vb = Vit + Vw + Vr

10(cos 37 i + sin 37 j) = Vit + (-2 i) + (-4 j)

8 i + 6 j = Vit + (-2 i) + (-4 j)

Vit = 10 i + 10 j

The boat travels at 14.14 km/ph 45 degrees north of east because of its own power.
