Answer: Let the speed of stream = x

              Speed of boat = 20 km per hour

              Distance = 48 km

              Time taken by motor boat to go downstream = 48/ ( x + 20 ) hr

              Time taken by motor boat to go  upstream  = 48/ ( x - 20 ) hr

A/C to the question :

              48/ ( x + 20 ) + 1 =  48/ ( x - 20 )

               48/ ( x + 20 )  - 48/ ( x - 20 ) = 1

               48( 1/ x + 20 - 1/x - 20 ) = 1

               1/ x + 20 - 1/x - 20  = 48

               x-20-x+20/ ( x + 20 )  ( x - 20 ) = 48

               x² + 20x + 20x + 400 = 48

                x² + 40x +400 = 48

                x² + 40x +400-48 =0

                  x² + 40x + 352 = 0

     ∴ This is our quadratic equation and u can solve it by  quadratic formula for finding the value of x means speed of stream.
