Given: A motorcycle has been travelling 13.75 km within 30 minutes. It made a U-turn and continued travelling for 7.39 km for 20 minutes.

To find:

(a) Speed of the motorcycle.

(b) Velocity of the motorcycle.

Solution:

(a)

  • Speed is of an object is the total distance travelled in total time.
  • In the given question the total distance is,

        13.75 km + 7.39 hm = 21.14 km

  • And, the total time the motorcycle travelled for is,

        30 + 20 = 50 minutes

                     = 0.83 hours

  • So, the speed can be calculated as,

        speed = \frac{21.14km}{0.83hr}

                  = 25.47kmhr^{-1}

(b)

  • Velocity of a body is the change in the position of the body with respect to the change in time.
  • The change in the position of the motorcycle is,

        13.75 km - 7.39 hm = 6.36 km

  • And, the change in time is,

        30 - 20 = 10 minutes

                     = 0.17 hours

  • So, the velocity of the motorcycle is calculated as,

        velocity = \frac{6.36km}{0.17hr}

                      = 37.41 kmhr^{-1}

Therefore,

(a) the speed of the motorcycle is 25.47 kmhr⁻¹.

(b) the velocity of the motorcycle is 37.41 kmhr⁻¹.
