Given that ,

A motorcyclist drives from A to B with a uniform speed of 40 km/h and returns back with a speed of 50 km/h

We know that , the average speed when object moves equal distance with different speed is given by

  \large \sf \fbox{V_{av} =  \frac{2 v_{1}v_{2}}{v_{1} + v_{2}} }

Thus ,

 \sf \mapsto V_{av} = \frac{2 \times 40 \times 50}{40 + 50}  \\  \\ \sf \mapsto V_{av} =  \frac{400}{90}  \\  \\ \sf \mapsto V_{av} = 4.4 \:  \: k/hr

 \therefore \sf \underline{The \:  average \:  speed \:  is  \: 4.4 \:  km/hr}

and

Since , the displacement is zero

 \therefore \sf \underline{The \:  average \:  velocity \:  is  \: 0 \:  km/hr}
