Due to anomalous behaviour of water.In cold regions,during winter,temperature of atmosphere falls well below 0 degree celcius . As the temperature are decreases,water surfaces of lakes and ponds start contrasting.Hence,density increases & it sinks to bottom.This continues till temperature of all water in lake falls to 4 degree celcius.
