We know:-
Rate of change in speed is called acceleration whether the object is slowing down or speeding up.
So,
Consider the train,then-

-------->------------>---------->-----
Train in. < 15 seconds > Train at
motion. rest

and it's acceleration was -3m/s^2 or -3m/s/s
So distance travelled by train at the retardation due to brakes = 15/3 = 5m ANS.
