The fibers of striated muscle have a cylindrical shape having blunt ends, whereas those in smooth muscle can be described as being spindle-like with tapered ends.

Two other characteristics that differentiate striated muscle from smooth muscle are the fact that the former has higher amounts of mitochondria and contains cells that are multinucleated.

Cardiac muscle cells are mononucleated. Areolar tissue is loose connective tissue that consists of a meshwork of collagen, elastic tissue, and reticular fibers, with many connective tissue cells in between the meshwork of fibers.
