epiglottis

4. TRACHEA (WINDPIPE) Trachea is long, muscular tube extending from the larynx in the neck to bronchi in the thoracic cavity. The front opening of trachea called glottis is guarded by a muscular flap called epiglottis. The epiglottis closes the trachea at the time of swallowing of food.

The oral cavity leads into a short pharynx, which serves as a common passage for food and air. The oesophagus and the trachea (wind pipe) open into the pharynx. A cartilaginous flap, called as epiglottis, prevents the entry of food into the glottis opening of the wind pipe during swallowing.
