a) The principle in lactometer is Archimedes' principle.
Archimedes' principle:
It states than when an object is immersed fully or partially in a fluid, it experiences an upward force that is equal to the weight of the fluid displace by the object.
b) Archimedes' principle is used in designing ships and submarine sinks. An iron nail sinks but not the ship. It is due to the application of Archimedes' principle.
Lactometers use Archimedes' principle to determine the purity of milk. Hydrometer which is used for determining the density of liquids is also based on this principle.
