(a) Insulin is released by the 'beta cells' in the islets of Langerhans in response to food. Its role is to lower glucose levels in the bloodstream and promote the storage of glucose in fat, muscle, liver and other body tissues. 'Alpha cells' in the islets of Langerhans produce another important hormone, glucagon.

(b) There is a need for the chemical communication in multi cellular organisms. These communication is done by different hormones. Also the chemical communication is very important as it sends the message to the nervous system as it protects the body from Any other harmful stimulus.
