Given info : A narrow slit is illuminated with sodium yellow light of wavelength λ = 589 nm. If the central maximum extends to θ= ± 30.0°.

To find : width of the narrow slit is ....

solution : here central maximum extends to θ = ± 30°

so, θ = 30°

using formula, dsinθ = mλ

here, m = 1 , λ = 589 nm

so, dsin30° = 1 × 589 nm

⇒d × 1/2 = 589 nm

⇒d = 2 × 589 nm = 1178 nm = 1178 × 10¯9 m

= 1.178 × 10¯⁶ m

= 1.178 μm

Therefore the width of narrow slit is 1.178μm
