A nephron consists of three parts: a renal corpuscle, a renal tubule and the associated capillary network, which originates from the cortical radiate arteries. The renal corpuscle, located in the renal cortex, is composed of a network of capillaries known as the glomerulus, as well as a cup shaped chamber that surrounds it, the glomerular or Bowman’s capsule. Below is shown a kidney tubule and its associated blood vessels, X Y B Z and A. Nephron is associated with filtering of the blood and hence urine formation.
Table below shows the concentration of some substances in the blood at X,
the fluid at Y and the urine at Z.
Substance Concentration/ g per 100 cm3
Blood at X Fluid at Y Urine at Z
Glucose 0.1 0.1 0.0
Protein 7 0 0
Sodium Ions 0.35 0.35 0.5
Urea 0.03 0.03 2.0
a) Analyse the table and answer the following questions: ( 1 mark each)
1. Has molecules which are too large to pass through the walls of capillaries.
2. Is all reabsorbed in the kidney.
3. Is a metabolic waste product.
4. Name the process during urine formation which helps in restoring useful components back in the blood?
b) During the experiment to show that carbon dioxide is given off during respiration why does water rise up the delivery tube?(1)Immersive Reader
