Solution : A neutral atom (atomic number >1) consist of equal number of protons and electrons.

  • When an atom has equal number of electrons and protons , it has equal amount of negative (due to electrons) and positive charge (due to neutrons) . Therefore the total electric charge is zero and atom is neutral.
  • When atom losses or gain electrons  during a chemical reaction or bond formation, total electrical charge change and the atom is said to be ionized or charged
  • The difference between the neutral atom ad ionized atom is , in neutral atom , though total electric charge is zero , it still has little electromagnetic attraction to other atoms , another atoms get close to the atom and the began to share electrons.
  • While on the other hand ionized atom is has strong electrical field, even at larger distances. Due to the strong electric field the atom is strongly attracted to other atoms and molecules and become highly chemical reactive.
