A neutral conducting sphere is placed on a frictionless plate midway between two fixed unequal
point charges: qL = +5μC and qR = +1μC. The sphere is free to move and is insulated from the
ground.

In which direction do you expect the sphere to move?

Answer:

The sphere will move to right or the sphere will not move.

The sphere will move in right direction.

The value of charge which is placed at left is (q_L) = +5 μC

The value of the charge which id placed at right is (q_R) = +1 μC

  • Now, as the two charges are positive, so they will repeal each other.
  • And, as they are of other amount, the Electric field created by them will have different value, but not their mutual force.

Given, the sphere is neutral.

The sphere is kept on a friction less plate midway between the point charges.

  • The Electric field which will act upon it, will be due to +5 and +1 μC.
  • As 5 μC is greater, so the effect of it on the sphere will be greater.
  • And, as it is positive charge, so the created electric field will be away from it, i.e., towards the right direction.

So, the sphere will move in right direction.
