Answer:
Sharp showers on Thursday afternoon took Kolkantans by surprise. Rains which had started at 2 pm in most places continued till 5pm. However, going by rainfall recorded by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation drainage pumping stations, there was a sharp south-north divide in the rainfall pattern. While some south Kolkata areas received heavy rainfall between 2pm and 3pm, northern parts of the city were left relatively dry in absence of a heavy downpour.
Records reveal that in south Kolkata Kalighat and its adjoining areas received highest rainfall (47mm in an hour). On the other hand, Ultadanga received only 2mm rainfall during the same span of time. Besides Kalighat, Ballygunge, Mominpore and Topsia received heavy rainfall in the afternoon
