Among monovalent metals, the nitrate of silver decomposes to give NO2, along with the free metal and oxygen. The monovalent alkali metals like sodium and potassium do not give NO2 or any other oxide of nitrogen on decomposition. Ammonium nitrate yields nitrous oxide (N2O) on heating.
