The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (SSB) prize for Science and Technology is one of the most sought after awards in India and is named after Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, the founder and Director of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research. This award, is given as a recognition for notable work and research in environmental science, biology, medicine, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and engineering. The award was first distributed in 1958 for outstanding work in science and technology. 
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), proposes names of candidates for this award and on 26th September (CSIR Foundation Day), the Prime Minister distributes it. Each of the above disciplines can have a maximum of two winners and the prize money for the award is Rs. 5 Lakh.
