Gerund is the 'ing' form of verb. example: winning, cleaning, speaking, dancing etc.

Combining the given sentences with the help of gerund

1: He ran fast. He won the race.

He ran fast winning the race.

2: She reads novels. She enjoys it.

She is reading novels and enjoying it

3: He used to play tennis. He has now given it up.

He used to play tennis but now he is giving it up.

4: The dog saw the thief. It began to bark.

The dog saw the thief and began barking.

5: I washed my hands. I sat down to take dinner.

I washed my hands sitting down for dinner.

So this way we can combine the sentences with the help of Gerund. Most of the time, gerunds are used in the sentences of present continuous tense. But we can also use them in past continuous tense.
