By the given condition

x - x \times 20\% = 40 \\ \\ x - x \times \frac{20}{100} = 40 \\ \\ x - \frac{x}{5} = 40 \\ \\ \frac{5x - x}{5} = 40 \\ \\ \frac{4x}{5} = 40 \\ \\ x = \frac{40 \times 5}{4} \\ \\ x = 10 \times 5 \\ \\ x = 50

so the required number is " 50 ".
