Answer:

let the number be x.

So, 20% of x

         = (20/100) *x

         =x/5

Given,

x - x/5 = 40

4x/5 = 40

x = 40*5/4

  = 50

Let the number be x

Another number = 20 % of x = 20/100 * x = 2/10 * x = 1/5 * x = x/5

Given : Number exceeds the other by 40. It means a number is 40 more than the other. So, Difference between the numbers is 40.

Equation formed

x -  \frac{x}{</strong><strong>5</strong><strong>}  = 40

 \frac{x \times </strong><strong>5</strong><strong>}{1 \times </strong><strong>5</strong><strong>}  -  \frac{x}{</strong><strong>5</strong><strong>}  = 40

 \frac{</strong><strong>5</strong><strong>x}{</strong><strong>5</strong><strong>}  -  \frac{x}{</strong><strong>5</strong><strong>} = 40

 \frac{</strong><strong>4</strong><strong>x}{</strong><strong>5</strong><strong>} = 40

</strong><strong>4</strong><strong>x = 40 \times </strong><strong>5</strong><strong>

</strong><strong>4</strong><strong>x = </strong><strong>2</strong><strong>0</strong><strong>0</strong><strong>

x =  \frac{</strong><strong>2</strong><strong>00}{</strong><strong>4</strong><strong>}

x = 50

Therefore the required number is 50.
