Let the number be x......
Then, it's reciprocal is 1/x...
Acc. to ques,
x-4/x=3
=>x²-4=3x
=>x²-3x-4=0
=>x²-4x+x-4=0
=>x(x-4)+1(x-4)=0
=>(x-4)(x+1)=0
=>x=4,-1

Hence the two numbers are 4,-1

========================================

let the number be x

=>A number exceeds four times its reciprocal by 3.

=>so let us form an euqation

=> x = 4
 (\frac{1}{x} ) +3

=>x =  \frac{4}{x} +3

=>x  =  \frac{4 +3x}{x}'

=>x² = 4 +3x

=> x² -3x -4 = 0

=>x² - 4x +x - 4 = 0

=>(x-4)(x+1)=0

=>∴   x = -1 and 4
