The answer is given below :

Let us consider that the number be x.

Then, four-seventh of x = (4/7 * x)

By the given conditions, x exceeds (4/7 * x) by 18.

Thus,

x = (4/7 * x) + 18

=> x - (4/7 * x) = 18

=> (1 - 4/7)x = 18

=> (7 - 4)/7 * x = 18

=> 3/7 * x = 18

=> x = 18 * 7/3

=> x = 6 * 7

=> x = 42

So, the required number be 42.

NOTE :

Here, (*) is assumed as the sign of multiplication.

===================================

let the number be x

=>A number exceeds is four seventh by 18.

so let us form an ewuation

=>
x =  \frac{4x}{7}  +18

=>x - \frac{4x}{7} =18

=> \frac{7x}{7} - \frac{4x}{7} =18

=> \frac{3x}{7} =18

=>3x = 18*7

=>3x = 126

=>x = 126/3

=>x = 42

hence the number is 42
