let the unknown numbers be x and y.

   x = y + 12 ..... i)

 and

   x + y = 72

⇒ x = 72 - y. ..... ii)

on substituting value of x in equation 1, we get

               72 - y = y + 12

           ⇒  72 - 12 = 2y

           ⇒ y = 60/2

           ∴ y = 30

by placing value of y in ii), we get

           x = 72 - 30

         ∴ x = 42

so, the numbers required are 42 and 30.
