GIVEN:

  • A number is 3 less than another number.
  • By adding 17 to twice the larger number becomes thrice the smaller number.

TO FIND:

  • What are the numbers ?

SOLUTION:

Let the larger number be 'x'

and,

Smaller Number be '(x 3)'

We have given that, A number is 3 less than another number. By adding 17 to twice the larger number becomes thrice the smaller number.

According to question:-

On putting the given values in the formula, we get

\sf{\rightarrow 2x + 17 = 3(x - 3)}

\sf{\rightarrow 2x + 17 = 3x - 9}

\sf{\rightarrow 2x - 3x = -9 - 17}

\sf{\rightarrow -x = -26}

\bf{\rightarrow x = 26}

  • Bigger number = x = 26
  • Smaller number = x 3 = 26 3 = 23

Hence, the two numbers are 26 and 23 respectively.
