Let the number = x
When increased by 20%
Increased number = x + 20%
= x + 20/100
= (5x + 1)/5
When the number is decreased by 20%
Decreased number = (5x + 1)/5 x 20/100
2(5x + 1) = 50
10x + 2 = 50
10x = 50 - 2
x = 48/10
x = 4.8
