Let the original number be ' x '.

Given that first it is increased by 20 %, therefore,

x + 20 % of x
=> x + 20x/100
=> x + 2x/10
=> x + 0.2 x
=> 1.2 x

Hence, new number = 1.2 x

Now it is given that the number is decreased by 20 %, therefore,

1.2 x - 20 % of 1.2 x
=> 1.2 x - ( 20 * 1.2x ) / 100
=> 1.2 x - 24x/100
=> 1.2 x - 0.24 x
=> 0.96 x

Hence, final number = 0.96 x

Therefore, final number will be 0.96 time of the original number.
