Let the old number be = x

New number = x + 20% of x

= x + 20x/100

= 120x/100

= 6x/5

The number should be decreased by 6x/5 - x

= (6x-5x) / 5 = x/5

% decease

= (x/5) / 120x * 100

= x/600x * 100

= 1/6

= 16.66%

The new number should be decreased by 16.66% to restore it to the original number.
