Let the old number be = x

New number = x + 20% of x = x + 20x/100 = 120x/100 = 6x/5

The number should be decreased by 6x/5 - x = (6x-5x) / 5 = x/5

% decease = (x/5) / 120x * 100 = x/600x * 100 = 1/6 = 16.66%

the new number should be decreased by 16.66% to restore it to the original number
