Given, a number is increased by 40% and then again by 40%.

____________________________________________________________

Successive percentage change is A + B + (AxB)/100

= 40 + 40 + (40x40)/100

= 80 + 16

= 96

So the number was increased by 96%,

Now, as to get the original number back,

= (196 - 100) / 196 * 100

= 96/196 * 100

= 48.97%

So we need to decrease the new number by 48.97% to get back the original number.
