Let the number which is subtracted from-13 to get -40 be x.

Now , according to the question :-

 \implies - 13 - x = - 40

Now we will bring -13 from left hand side to right hand side. Therefore it's sign will change from negative to positive.

 \implies - x = - 40 + 13

 \implies - x = - 27

Now, we will cancel out negative sign from both the sides.

\implies x = 27

Answer :

27 is subtracted from -13 to get -40.

Verification of answer :-

To verify our answer , we will substract 27 from -13. If we get -40 then our answer is correct.

\implies - 13 - ( 27)

\implies - 13 -27

\implies - 40

Therefore when we substracted 27 from -13 , we got -40. Therefore our answer is correct.

Hence verified
