I believe that it should look like this: 

if we say that the number we want to find is x, we will get: 

\frac{x}{6}=x-40 <--- that's because diminish means to substract. So the number we're looking for needs to be both divided by 6 (left side of the equation) and substracted with 40 (right side of the equation). 

After that it's easier: 

\frac{x}{6}=x-40|*6\\\frac{6x}{6}=6x-240\\x=6x-240\\5x=240\\x=48

After that we can also check if the equation checks out too: 

\frac{48}{6}=48-40\\8=8
