Let the number be x

Then,

According to Question :-

 = > x + \frac{40x}{100} = 42 \\ \\ = > x + \frac{4x}{10} = 42 \\ \\ = > \frac{10x}{1 \times 10} + \frac{4x}{10} = 42 \\ \\ = > \frac{14x}{10} = 42 \\ \\ = > x = \frac{42 \times 10}{14} = \frac{420}{14} \\ \\ = > x = 30

Hence,

The number is 30.
