Here a number, say x, is selected from 123 and another number, say y, is selected from 149. Since each are of three digit numbers, the no. of possible selections is n(S) = 3 × 3 = 9.

(x, y) € S = {(1, 1), (1, 4), (1, 9), (2, 1), (2, 4), (2, 9), (3, 1), (3, 4), (3, 9)}

The possible values of xy are 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 12, 18, 27. Among these, 1, 2, 3, 4, 8 are the products less than 9. Then the possible outcomes satisfying these products are given in the set below.

E = {(1, 1), (2, 1), (3, 1), (1, 4), (2, 4)}

Thus, n(E) = 5

Hence probability is, P(E) = 5 / 9.
