Question:

In a rational number, the numerator is one more than its denominator. If 17 is added to the numerator and 1 is decreased in the denominator, then the rational number becomes 3/4. Find the rational number.

Answer:

Required rational number is

-74/-75

Solution:

It is said that, in the rational number, the numerator is one more than its denominator.

Thus;

Let the denominator be "x" and the numerator be "(x+1)".

Also,

It is given that,

If 17 is added to the numerator and 1 is decreased in the denominator, then the rational number becomes 3/4.

Thus,

=> {(x+1)+17}/(x-1) = 3/4

=> (x+18)/(x-1) = 3/4

=> 4(x+18) = 3(x-1)

=> 4x + 72 = 3x - 3

=> 4x - 3x = -72 - 3

=> x = - 75

Thus,

Denominator = x = - 75

Numerator = x+1 = - 75 + 1 = - 74

Hence,

The required rational number will be;

-74/-75 .

Also,

The equivalent rational number will 74/75 .
