A object is dropped from an aircraft when it is directly above the target at a height of 1000m. The aircraft is moving with a horizontal velocity of 500km/h. Will the object hit the target? If not by how much distance will the object miss the target

Answer:

The distance the object will miss the target is 1982 m

Explanation:

According to the problem the object is dropped to hit the target from the height of 1000 m

The velocity of the aircraft will be 500 km/h = 138.89 m/s

Now as it can be seen that the object cannot hit the target as the aircraft has the horizontal velocity initially.

As the object has no vertical velocity .

let the vertical velocity will be, v(vertical)= 0

let t be the time when the object touch the ground.

s = v(vertical)- 1/2 gt^2[ here s is the height from which the object is dropped]

1000 = 0 - 1/2 x 9.81 x t^2

=> t = 14.27 sec

Therefore the horizontal displacement of the object will be ,

velocity x time = 138.89 x 14.27 = 1982 m
