A one-way ring road of length 20 km is modelled as a regular pentagon ABCDE, with the traffic

flowing in one direction ABCDEA. At the junctions A and C, cars enter the road at flow rates of 500

and 400 cars per hour respectively. At the junctions B, D and E, cars exit the road at flow rates of

300, 250 and 350 cars per hour respectively.

You are required to apply numerical methods, incorporated into computer programs, to find the

possible traffic flows at the five road segments. Then, if the traffic on the segment DE can be

controlled, find the range of flow rate to be maintained on DE so that no segment carries a flow of

more than 800 cars per hour.​
