He was born and raised in Rameshwaram, Tamilnadu and studied physics and aerospace engineering. He spent the next four decades as scientist and a science administrator, mainly at the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and was intimately involved in the India's civil space programme and military missile development efforts.
