Given:

A paint supplier mixes a particular shade of green by using 3 parts blue to 2 parts yellow,

He mixes 12gallons of green paint

To find:

How much yellow did he use?

Solution:

The supplier mixes 3 parts blue and 2 parts yellow to make a shade of green

i.e., there is a total of 5 parts of green paint after mixing

Now, by using the basic unitary method, we get

For every 5 parts of green paint  → 2 parts of yellow shade is used

So, For every 1 part of green paint  → \frac{2}{5} parts of yellow shade are used

∴ For every 12 gallons of green paint,

= \frac{2}{5} \times 12

= \frac{24}{5}

=  \bold{4.8\:gallons \:of\:yellow\:is\:used}

Thus, he used 4.8 gallons of yellow shade to prepare the green paint.
