Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

  • A painter can paint a building in 4 days and his apprentice can do it in 6 days.

To Find:

  • How long will it take them to paint this building if they work together on it except for one day whenthe painter is ill and the apprentice works alone?

Solution:

Painter's 1 day's work=1/4

His apprentice's 1 day's work=1/6

(Painter+His apprentice)'s 1 day's work

→1/4+1/6

→3+2/12=5/12

Remaining work=1-5/12=12-5/12=7/12

Time taken by apprentice to complete the remaining work=7/12÷1/6

→7/12×6

→7/2

3 1/2 days
